Mitigating Migraines

Most of us have experienced the occasional headache, and they can be quite a pain! Headaches are unpleasant pains that cause pressure or aching in your head. They can occur on both sides of your head, and happen most often in the forehead, temples, and back of the neck. Typically, headaches are temporary and usually last for a few hours. Migraines, however, are intense or severe forms of headaches, with additional symptoms including nausea, pain behind eyes/ears, seeing spots or flashing lights, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and vomiting. They can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days! Pain from a migraine can be moderate to severe, sometimes even inhibiting individuals from performing daily tasks.

There are common medications available for those who suffer from migraines- promethazine, aspirin, ibuprofen- but those suffering with headaches tend to see improvement with these medications, rather than those suffering from migraines. Additionally, if a person takes medication for more than 10 days in a month, rebound headaches can occur, making headaches worsen overtime rather than improving them.

There are lifestyle changes that can help ease migraines involving diet changes and stress management, but many practitioners believe nutritional supplements can help to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. These supplements can provide additional health benefits because they also work as antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, and can act as muscle relaxers. If you’re looking for an alternative form of migraine relief, consider including the following supplements in your daily routine:

  • Feverfew- This traditional herb has been used since the first century in medicine, known for its ability to support a healthy inflammatory response. People take feverfew by mouth for the prevention and treatment of migraines. Consider Migranol by Designs for Health, which is comprised of feverfew extract. Additionally, curcumin and rosemary in the formula provide antioxidant properties and can assist with brain function.
  • Butterbur- People use the leaf, root, and bulb of the butterbur herb to make medicine capable of treating a number of ailments, including pain, upset stomach, fevers, and migraines. The herb contains natural components that may relieve spasms and decrease swelling. Check out
MigraMAXX by Karuna, made with standardized butterbur!
  • Magnesium- People with migraines often have lower levels of magnesium than people who do not have them. Additionally, magnesium plays a key role in ensuring the proper functioning of nerves, suggesting that deficiencies in magnesium may be related to migraine frequency. Some studies suggest that magnesium can reduce the frequency of migraine attacks in people with low levels of magnesium. MigraPlex by Karuna includes magnesium in its formula to help ease the effects of migraines.
