Conquering Seasonal Allergies

Spring is a welcome sign of warm weather and sunshine. But, for allergy sufferers, it is clouded by a miserable time of itchy eyes, sneezing, and runny noses. Allergy symptoms occur when the body releases a biochemical called histamine. The release of histamine is the immune system’s reaction to irritating substances like animal hair, dust, or pollen. For some people, allergy season can last well into late fall. To deal with these symptoms, many rely on over-the-counter anti-histamines and decongestants. These medications come along with a variety of side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, or dry mouth. Decongestants can even raise blood pressure and heart rate, making them unsafe for those with certain health conditions.

Although allergies are genetic and therefore, cannot be reversed, many healthcare practitioners believe certain nutritional supplements will enhance the immune system, making allergies more manageable. Plus, these immune-boosting supplements provide additional health benefits, rather than undesirable side effects! For allergy alleviation, consider adding some of these supplements to your daily routine:

  • Stinging Nettle - This plant has been proven to relieve symptoms of hay fever like sneezing and watery eyes. Stinging nettle has the ability to reduce the amount of histamine the body releases in response to an allergen. For a seasonal allergy product containing stinging nettle, consider HistaEze by Designs for Health.
  • Quercetin - This bioflavonoid is found in many foods like onions, apples, and grapefruit. It has both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Quercetin decreases the release of histamine by blocking its release from mast cells (immune cells involved in the allergy response). By doing this, quercetin helps to relieve many allergy symptoms. One of the most popular seasonal allergy products with quercetin is
Aller-Essentials by Pure Encapsulations. It contains both quercetin and vitamin C for optimal relief.
  • Vitamin C (with bioflavonoids) - Vitamin C prevents the formation of histamine in response to an irritating substance. It also speeds up histamine breakdown if it is released in response to an allergen. As an added bonus, Vitamin C also has immune-enhancing effects that prevent infection and help the body to recover from illness faster. Vitamin C is most effective when taken with bioflavonoids to combat seasonal allergy symptoms. Pure Encapsulations offers a high-dosage Vitamin C product with quercetin (a bioflavonoid) as support. Ester-C & flavonoids is a great product to alleviate allergy symptoms.
  • Probiotics - Supplementing the intestinal flora is an excellent way to reduce infections and inflammation. Studies have shown that probiotics containing an Acidophilus bacterial strain are most effective at reducing seasonal allergy symptoms. Check out ProtoDophilus Respiratory Care by Protocol for Life Balance – it contains two strains of bacteria that are specifically proven to offer immune support for seasonal allergies!
