Arthritis Awareness Month

May is Arthritis Awareness Month, a disability that affects more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children. People often think of arthritis as a single disease when in fact it is an informal way of referring to joint pain. It is usually associated with old age, but anyone of any age or gender can have arthritis, as there are more than 100 different types. Common arthritis joint symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion, with mild, moderate, or severe effects on the body. For some, symptoms may remain stagnant for years, but others may have symptoms that progress or get worse over time. Severe cases of arthritis can cause chronic pain and the inability to perform daily tasks like walking and climbing stairs.

Many people seek prescribed arthritis medication to soothe aches and pains, but these medications can come with negative side effects and risks: heartburn, stomach upset and stomach ulcers, and even increased risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke in extreme cases. There are natural vitamins and supplements available that have demonstrated the ability to help mitigate pain resulting from arthritis. If you’re looking for a new form of relief, look for solutions that include the following ingredients:

  • Glucosamine: This chemical compound is found naturally in the body and helps maintain the health of cartilage that cushions bones at the joints. Glucosamine levels drop as we age, and as a result, the joints breakdown. Try EPA/DHA-Glucosamine by Pure Encapsulations which contains 1500 mg of glucosamine in each serving to help counteract the degeneration of glucosamine and mitigate the effects of arthritis.
  • MSM: Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a chemical in the body that helps form connective tissue and repair joints, tendons, and ligaments. It can also serve as a supplement to soothe chronic pain, osteoarthritis, joint inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, inflammation around the joints, tendinitis, and swelling around the tendons that occurs as a result of aging or malnourishment. Consider GC-MSM 3550 by Progressive Laboratories that uses MSM and a number of other key ingredients to help support joint health.
  • Chondroitin Sulfate: This glycosaminoglycan is an important component in the development of connective tissue, which helps provide shape, lubrication, and shock absorption to bone, cartilage, intervertebral disc material, and synovial fluid. Combined with other cartilage support supplements, it has demonstrated the ability to slow the breakdown of cartilage and offer flexibility. Chondroitin Sulfate by Karuna is a great source of chondroitin sulfate to combat cartilage and tissue deterioration that result from arthritis.
