I eat a healthy diet, so why do I need supplements?

Simply put, today’s food is far less nutritious than it used to be; stripped of its nutritive value by chemical alteration, prolonged storage and processing, and changes in agricultural techniques (among other factors).

  • Fertilization — studies have shown that recent changes in fertilization methods have caused depletion of selenium, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and other vital minerals in soil. As a result, the fruits and vegetables that we consume are often missing normal levels of these important nutrients.
  • Transporting — fruits and vegetables begin to naturally lose nutrients as soon as they are picked. By the time they are shipped hundreds or thousands of miles, stored, purchased, and prepared by us, nutrient-loss can be quite substantial!
  • Lifestyle Change — We have gone from an age of buying fresh, local produce a few times a week to buying food packaged in cardboard boxes and packed with preservatives.
  • Livestock Practices — cost-effective agricultural strategies of raising livestock are cutting into the nutritional value of our diets key proteins. For example, livestock, which used to be raised on a diet of Omega-3 rich grass, are now raised mostly on corn, which contains Omega-6 fatty acids. Consequently, our diets have been thrown out of balance by a lack of Omega-3’s and an excess of Omega-6’s. This imbalance, stimulated further by the trans-fats consumed through pre-packaged foods, has been shown to send our bodies into a constant pro-inflammatory state: a condition commonly associated with injury or stress, and proven to contribute largely to inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and arthrosclerosis.
  • Processing — highly processed foods full of high fructose corn syrup are potentially increasing our already high risk for heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

So, you may think you are eating healthy… but are you really?
